About Battlefield Witness | Historical Military Fiction by Anders Lawerny

Battlefield Witness is an independent historical fiction publication founded in May 2026 by Anders Lawerny. Every story published here is a first-person, immersive witness account of a real military engagement — from ancient Thermopylae to 20th-century special operations.

The premise is simple: history's greatest battles deserve to be experienced, not just catalogued. Each story places the reader inside the smoke, noise, and human reality of a real conflict, grounded in primary sources and serious historical research.

The Research Method

Every story at Battlefield Witness is built on a foundation of primary and secondary sources before a single word of fiction is written. The research process typically includes:

  • Primary sources: memoirs, letters, unit diaries, and contemporary accounts from the soldiers and witnesses who were there
  • Academic military history and battle analysis
  • Terrain, weather, and logistical records where available
  • Archaeological and forensic historical research

The fiction follows the facts. Where dramatic licence is taken, it is clearly within the boundaries of what the historical record permits.

About the Author

Anders Lawerny is the founder and sole author of Battlefield Witness. His approach to military historical fiction is rooted in the conviction that the most powerful way to understand history is through the sensory, human experience of those who lived it.

Each story at Battlefield Witness represents Anders's effort to make that experience as accurate, vivid, and respectful of the historical record as possible — honouring the men and women whose real actions form the backbone of every narrative.

I enjoy writing sometimes, a kind of therapy, often short formulations, thoughts, observations and stories of various kinds. I liked writing early on and was praised by my Swedish teacher. It has mostly been a hobby so far, but I have long thought about writing books and longer stories. But often shorter stories that I have been curious to realize and at the same time in some way experience. This as a way to practice, learn and find my own storytelling style and with my own intention. I have ideas and am creative, but I have not had the patience to sit down and write large volumes so far. One step at a time, and we will see what happens.

Welcome and best regards.

Anders Lawerny.
